The TAS History

During middle to late 1976, a few members from T.R.A.C.S (Townsville Radio Aeronautical Control Society) decided to branch out and start their own club. The club was formed and affiliated (by the founding members) with the MAAQ in early 1977, although Castle Hill Amateur Radio Model Aeronauts (CHARMA) was not the original name, it was the one settled on. Castle Hill Amateur Radio Model Aeronauts (CHARMA) was operating from a field across from the 162nd Recce Squadron on University Drive. That field is now mostly the suburb of Annandale.
This group stayed at the old field until forced out by the constraints of development. A new site at Mount Landers near Woodstock was sourced but objections from a nearby resident meant that the site could not go ahead. In 1989, CHARMA applied for the same site, but this time the relocated railway line again caused access problems and the present site at Anthill Plains was offered. This site was subsequently developed into our present flying site along with Town Planning Approval and the site rezoned to ‘Sports and Recreation – Model Aircraft Flying’.
1992 saw the name change to Townsville Aeromodellers (TA) as the Castle Hill component was no longer relevant. A further change in 1993 due to the club becoming incorporated gave us the present name of Townsville Aeromodellers Society Inc (TAS).

TAS Activities

The main activity of the society is promoting and assisting in radio control model aircraft flying but free flight, control line, electric flight and indoor modelling activities are not excluded.
Members from TAS have successfully competed in many club events at Bundaberg, Rockhampton, Mackay, Innisfail, Sarina, Charters Towers and other capital and regional venues, including national competitions.
The annual TAS Annual Gordon Pardon Memorial Fun Fly held in July where participating members from clubs in the region and as far as Brisbane meet and fly in a number of events over the weekend along with a social event (usually at the field) and plenty of food and tall stories.
At the time of cyclone Althea making its debut in Townsville in 1972, the Castle Hill Amateur Radio Model Aeronauts (CHARMA) was operating from a field across from the 162nd Recce Squadron on University Drive. That field is now mostly the suburb of Annandale.
